This humorous historical novel is set during the San Juan Island "Pig War" of 1859, a potentially disastrous incident of international importance which was rendered comical by the bizarre actions of the real people involved. The Pig War was the crisis of a long-festering U.S border dispute with England over the western end of the U.S.-Canada boundary line. The 1846 Treaty of Oregon had established the boundary as the middle of the channel separating Vancouver Island from the U.S. mainland; but it failed to mention little San Juan Island, which lies between them. British Columbia's Governor Sir James Douglas claimed that the channel in question was Roasario Strait, which lies beween the mainland and San Juan Island, thus putting the little island within British territory. U.S. Army General William Harney insisted that the treaty referred to Haro Strait between Vancouver Island and San Juan Island, which would put the smaller island on the U.S. side of the boundary. Meanwhile, settlers from both sides arrived on San Juan Island and got along quite well with each other . . . until Harney ordered Captain George Pickett (soon to be a Confederate General) to occupy San Juan Island with 66 U.S. soldiers and Douglas sent Captain Geoffrey Phipps Hornby with 1,000 British marines to remove them. Michael Bunnell, whose family lived briefly on the site of Camp Pickett, never lost his boyhood fascination with this armed standoff in which only one shot was fired: the one that killed the pig. Bunnell has added fictional elements reminiscent of P. G. Wodehouse and a protagonist with some characteristics of Rex Stout's Archie Goodwin to flesh out his historically accurate novel "The Friendly Little War of Lyman Cutler".
